Keeping Up with the Pace of Change, with Sumo Logic VP, Bruno Kurtic

Play episode

Problem Solvers, pioneers, but more importantly data nerds. That’s how Sumo Logic describes itself, and well…it’s fitting. Rooted in big data and security, SumoLogic is among the most powerful machine data analytics services in the world, but to reach the pinnacle of any industry, requires a culture that strives to be the best.

“There’s a lot of discomfort in this type of a culture, because in order to really be willing to disrupt yourself so that you don’t get disrupted by somebody else, you have to empower and enable people inside of your company to challenge decisions, to take risks, to take accountability for those risks. But it has to be a culture that relies on transparency, collaboration, risk, and essentially distributed decision-making.”

Bruno Kurtic is the Founding Vice President of Product and Strategy for Sumo Logic and on this episode of IT Visionaries, Bruno delves into how the Sumo Logic platform operates, why the pace of change in the technology industry continues to keep them on their toes, and why more-and-more enterprises are utilizing multi-cloud approaches. Plus Bruno dives into what a successful technology culture looks like, how it should operate and every voice matters no matter where you sit in the company hierarchy.

Main Takeaways

  • Pace of Change: With the speed that technology is changing, you can never rest on your laurels. Companies must constantly be reinventing themselves and the services that they provide to their clients. One of the best ways to stay ahead of the curve is to implement an agile approach, that lets you pivot on a moments notice.
  • If You’re Note Reliable, What are You?: If you’re a digital business, your application services must be reliable and they must perform and they must consistently perform to the standards you sold the client on.Your product should always aim to be an industry leader in service and repair, because it what will always set you apart from your competitors is the reliability of your product.
  • One Cloud, Two Cloud…: 70% of enterprises now deploy a multi-cloud approach, which is a major shift from just 10 years ago when most companies were getting familiar with the cloud and adopting single cloud strategies. Because of these multi-cloud strategies, it’s affected the way software has to be integrated into the infrastructure of your tech stack.

Sumo Logic is a continuous intelligence platform, a new category of software that helps enterprises collect data generated by IT and the digital infrastructure that a company uses. Sumo Logic looks heavily at trace data, which includes transactional data and then dissects the meta data and turns them into easily readable insights for the client.

“If you’re a digital business, your application and services must be reliable,” Kurtic said. “They must perform and must be available and secure. That’s still a core use case for all digital businesses, making sure that you quickly repair things that are broken, and you understand the quality of service you constantly improve.”

As a cloud-native, multi-tenant platform, Sumo Logic helps their clients make data-driven decisions while reducing the time it takes to investigate security and operational issues. They do that by collecting and centralizing data, including working with more than 150 applications and integrations in an effort to make it easy to aggregate data across a company’s tech stack.

“A lot of companies are sort of in the thrust of the cloud migration,” Kurtic said. “They’re digitizing and then moving to the cloud, and what they don’t want to do is they don’t want to bring their old on-prem old school tools to the cloud because when you make a mental model shift to consume as a service star star as a service…So as they move their workloads to the cloud, they’re using different technologies, using different techniques, they are looking for different tools.”

Kurtic said that one of the key things those companies are looking for right now is consolidation of those tools and services, which is where their platform comes in.

“Our primary outcome is that we help our customers drive their customer experience through reliability,” he said. “That is what they want. They don’t care about the tool. They don’t care how you do it. What they want is they want the best outcome for their own business. If you think about, what does it mean if you have a more reliable digital service that competes in an industry, customers will flock to the ones that are most reliable, it’s a differentiator. What it does to us is we have to keep up with that demand. We always have to be on our tippy toes figuring out what’s the next thing.”

Pace of change continues to be one of the biggest obstacles for any technology company, and it’s something the Sumo Logic team continues to try and keep up with.

“We are always, always reinventing ourselves because of the pace of technology change,” Kurtic said. “[Tech] feels like it’s accelerating. In the early days it was cloud adoption that was accelerating. Amazon was going fast. Now, when you look at just the three cloud providers, dominant cloud providers,  they offer more than 500 infrastructure services and platform services for enterprises to consume. And any one of those at any moment can become a really high dominant hit.”

One of those dominant shifts has been the adoption of multi-cloud, Kurtic said.

“Multi-cloud adoption has exploded,” he said. “70% year-over-year growth in enterprises, running workloads, and multi-cloud which three years ago, there was almost nobody. Now it’s like the fastest growing customer segment.”
