“Revenue and profit equals free will.”
What’s the secret to building a $100-million-dollar brand? MaryRuth Ghiyam has done it, so she knows the answer pretty well. And it turns out, it’s pretty simple: make something people need and do it in a way that is sustainable. Easier said than done, right? Luckily, MaryRuth broke down what that entail on this episode. This is Up Next in Commerce, I’m your host, Stephanie Postles, and I’m excited for us to dive into this one.

How do you build on Amazon?
When it comes to Amazon, it’s all about knowing and playing within the rules. Amazon is one of the most powerful channels for DTC brands, but the rules of the road are always changing — what was acceptable a year ago could have you in trouble today. Keep a watchful eye on the channel and work with your partners there to always ensure that you are doing everything possible to keep your brand in the best position.
How should you build your company for the long-term?
The most important thing to consider when building up your company is creating a business model that can be sustainable in good times and in bad times. You have to be hyper-focused on EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization), and when that number is good, you’ll be able to invest in yourself, your company, and your employees.

About the Guest:
MaryRuth Ghiyam is the Founder of MaryRuth Organics. She is a certified health educator, nutritional consultant and chef. After the premature passing of her brother and father, and her mother’s diagnosis of two (thankfully benign) brain tumors, she traveled the country to learn about the body’s own healing powers. That journey led her to develop MaryRuth Organics, a family-friendly wellness brand, and to author her new book Liquids Till Lunch.
